There’s a certain kind of Southern artist who doesn’t just make music; they set the atmosphere.

For Alabama native Ladii A, Southern Soul is more than a genre. It’s a soundtrack for every aspect of listeners’ lives. As a singer, rapper and storyteller, she’s carving out a sound that feels distinctly her own while embracing the culture that shaped her.

But Ladii A is more than just music. She’s a prime example of being unapologetically confident, reflective without taking herself too seriously, and firmly committed to creating on her own terms. She’s building an identity around authenticity and making sure there’s plenty of room for a good time along the way.

I caught up with Ladii A to talk about finding her confidence, staying true to herself, the stories behind her music, Alabama’s musical legacy and what’s next for the artist who has one main goal when her music comes on: for you to have a good time.

Turning A Passion Into A Career

The singer and rapper says she knew music had become something bigger than a hobby when she realized she simply couldn’t stop creating—even when nobody was watching. She wasn’t creating for attention. She was creating because music had become her way of telling stories, healing, laughing and connecting with people.

And that connection is at the heart of what Ladii A wants her music to do.

“I wasn’t chasing attention. I was chasing the feeling. Once I realized my songs could make somebody dance, smile, or feel seen, I knew this was bigger than me.”

That spirit is especially evident in “Good Times,” the song she says best represents her as an artist.

“That record is me all day.”

Fun, unapologetic and unmistakably Southern, “Good Times” captures the energy Ladii A wants listeners to associate with her music. She envisions it playing everywhere from trail rides to family reunions—or simply during those moments when somebody needs to shake off a hard week.

Because for Ladii A, music doesn’t always have to be complicated. Sometimes you just need to let loose and have a good time!

Welcome to the Young Auntie Era

If you’ve spent any time following Ladii A, you’ve probably noticed her embracing the phrase “young auntie era.”

But this isn’t just a cute social media tagline. For Ladii A, it represents a particular kind of confidence.

“Being in my ‘young auntie era’ means I’m grown enough to know who I am but still young enough to enjoy life without apologizing for it,” she explains. “I’m the auntie that’ll tell you the truth, dance with you, feed everybody, and still be the life of the party. It’s confidence, freedom, wisdom, and fun all rolled into one.”

In other words: wisdom and fun don’t have to be opposites.

That same philosophy has found its way into her music.

Confidence Came From Living

Confidence is something plenty of people admire, but struggle to develop. Ladii A’s answer about where hers came from is simple: Life.

Every setback. Every rejection. Every lesson.

Her confidence wasn’t something that appeared overnight. It was built through surviving things she once wasn’t sure she’d make it through.

“I’ve stopped waiting for permission,” she says.

That mindset has also changed the way she approaches her artistry.

The woman Ladii A is today has given the artist permission to stop worrying about fitting into a box. She’s more comfortable creating from a place of honesty—telling real stories, being vulnerable, having fun and celebrating Southern culture without watering it down.

Southern Stories Are Everywhere

Ask Ladii A where she finds inspiration, and don’t expect a complicated answer.

Sometimes it’s on the highway, sitting on the porch, by people-watching, through a conversation, or a trail ride.

“Honestly, everyday life inspires me. Southern culture is full of stories if you’re paying attention,” she mentioned.

And Ladii A wants people outside the South to understand that Southern artists aren’t limited to one sound.

Soul, blues, gospel, R&B, hip hop, country and everyday life can all find their way into Southern music. Rather than being confined to a genre, Ladii A sees that blend as something uniquely Southern.

“Southern artists are storytellers. It’s not just music. It’s culture. It’s family. It’s community. It’s history.”

Authenticity Always Wins

One of the songs that reinforced that lesson for Ladii A was “Little Sally Walker.”

She admits she almost didn’t release it because, like many artists, she wondered whether people would understand what she was trying to do.

But eventually, she stopped worrying about what she thought people expected from her and leaned into who she really was, and everything clicked.

The response reminded her of something she’d already begun learning: “Seeing people connect with it reminded me why authenticity always wins.” It’s also a lesson she’s had to apply to her definition of success.

Ladii A says she once believed success had to happen on someone else’s timeline. If things weren’t happening quickly, she felt like she was falling behind. Now she sees things differently: “Now I understand timing matters. Every lesson I’ve learned has made me a better artist and a better businesswoman.”

An Alabama Mount Rushmore

When asked to create her own Alabama Artists Mount Rushmore, Ladii A chose four artists who represent different pieces of the state’s musical legacy.

“I’d say Lionel Richie because his songwriting is timeless. Gucci Mane because he changed Southern hip hop and inspired a generation. Sir Charles because he’s helped keep Southern Soul thriving. And Big Yayo because he’s one of Alabama’s voices that’s continued to represent the culture. Every one of them opened doors in their own lane and showed that Alabama produces real talent.”

Each, in her eyes, has opened doors in a different lane.

And that’s exactly the kind of legacy Ladii A hopes to create herself.

“Play That Ladii A”

When everything is said and done, Ladii A isn’t necessarily asking listeners to remember every statistic, stream or accomplishment.

She wants them to remember a feeling: Families dancing together, packed trail rides, people smiling after a long week, and, perhaps most importantly, somebody saying, “Play that Ladii A!”

“If my music brings joy, connection, and pride to Southern culture, then I’ve done what I came here to do,” the artist shared.
