As rising artists continue to push music beyond entertainment, DMV spoken word artist and emerging rapper Yxsterday delivers one of the more emotionally layered releases of the year with his new EP, Protest Pack. Featuring tracks including “Icebreaker,” “RINSE & REPEAT” (feat. 33dontay), “Stones.Of.Sauna.,” “UpLaws” (feat. Cameron Lush), and “FLaSH!”, the project plays like a time capsule of pain, reflection, resilience, and social consciousness. Some songs trace back nearly a decade, others were born during the emotional fallout surrounding the George Floyd protests, while newer records reflect more recent personal and societal tensions. Together, they create a project rooted in survival, healing, and breaking cycles.
What makes Protest Pack especially significant is that it extends beyond music into action. All proceeds from the EP are being donated to mutual aid efforts supporting people in need, reinforcing the project’s central message of community and care. The release reflects Yxsterday’s unique position as both an artist and healer, a spoken word poet who recently earned a Master’s degree in Social Work from the University of Michigan and incorporates music into therapeutic spaces. Influenced by a family history of activism and connected to cultural legacy through his uncle, legendary comedian Tommy Davidson, Yxsterday channels purpose into every line. Protest Pack isn’t designed for passive listening, it invites reflection, conversation, and connection.
